Recently I received a lot of enquiries from brides, asking me how to get started to find a perfect wedding dress? They told me they have flipped through different magazines, browsed through numerous websites, grabbed the images by eyes, and still don’t have a clue. When they tried to book an appointment for trial, they may find it disappointed when they don’t see the magic comes life! I must say that it is a very time-consuming process, not to say some bridal boutiques will charge a so-called “Trial fee”.
Here we go! 我們開始吧!
Determine Your Body Shape – 判斷您的身形
Have a good look at yourself in front of a full length mirror and to see what shape is your body. Basically, you can focus on the widest point of your shoulders, the widest part of your hips and the narrowest point of your waist. Now, use the images below to see which one is most like you.
- HOURGLASS – YOUR HIPS & SHOULDERS ARE SIMILAR IN SIZE WITH A WELL DEFINED WAIST.
- TRIANGLE/PEAR SHAPE – YOUR HIPS ARE WIDER THAN YOUR SHOULDERS.
- INVERTED TRIANGLE: YOUR SHOULDERS ARE WIDER THAN YOUR HIPS
- RECTANGLE – YOUR SHOULDERS, HIPS & WAIST ARE SIMILAR IN SIZE
Choose The Dress Style/Silhouette
Once you have a better idea of your own body shape, you will know what styles will go better on you. But before we dive in to see what will work best on you, have a look on what styles are usually available at bridal shops. They are usually classified as A-line, Empire, Ball Gown, Sheath, and Mermaid.
Have a look at the below image for an overview of each respective style.
Ok, let’s do a matching! 好吧, 讓我們做一個配對!
Hourglass: You are lucky, as almost all dress styles will look good on you, be it Ball Gown, A-line, Sheath, Empire, or mermaid! Whatever you like!
Triangle/Pear Shape: A-line gown is always a flattering choice.
A dropped-waist style or a ball gown will cover your bottom half. An off-the-shoulder neckline will keep the attention on your upper body to make the whole body look more balance! Try to avoid mermaid as this may bold up your hip. Sheath is not a good choice too as it tends to cling on your body.
A ball gown style will work perfect. You can even consider to add on a little bit of details (e.g. the bow) to the hip area too. An off-the-shoulder or halter-necks, or higher cut necks, will able to balance out the wide shoulder/bust line. Just need to avoid too much details on the “top”, so fancy sleeves/wider necklines are No-No.
Rectangle: “No curve”? Don’t worry, it is not difficult to create an illusion of curves, by drawing the attention upwards the chest and hips, e.g. a V-neck, strapless, one-shoulder. A beaded/crystallized, or simply a colored sash to put around your waistline will work too.
You’re almost done! So before going into any wedding boutique, you might like to have some ideas of your body shape, and what styles will look best on you. But please bear in mind that what looks amazing on models, may do nothing on you at all. Try to focus on “Balance”. E.g. When you have a big hip, instead of cover up by lots of details, you should stay away from details around the hip area, but add things on top so as to divert the attention!
